About Us

Psychology Matters was born out of a passion to deliver quality, client-centered psychology services. We strongly believe that psychological wellness is for everyone, and we hope to help our clients achieve this.

Mental health problems have been in the limelight over the last 3 years, much due to COVID-related stress and changes. This has resulted in higher rates of Depression, Anxiety disorders and other stress-related changes. Singapore, despite its higher rates of mental health literacy, has also suffered. Research also clearly showed a huge gap between knowing the symptoms and treatment-seeking behaviors, which is worrying.

Mental health labels such as Depression and Anxiety sound overwhelming. However, these negative emotions possibly direct us towards areas of emotional need and help.

Gifford Chan

Principal Clinical Psychologist

Our founder, Gifford, is a passionate clinical psychologist. He believes in increasing mental health awareness and providing mental health treatments for all. His previous working experiences include the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), the award-winning, multi-disciplinary Response, Early intervention and Assessment in Community mental Health (REACH) team, Thomson Paediatric Centre (The Child Development Centre), Singapore Armed Forces Psychological Care Centre, and in Mind Care Therapy Suites.

Gifford believes that self-awareness and compassion plays a big role in understanding the functions of our many behaviors in various settings. This explains why since childhood and adolescence, we adopted and maintained certain maladaptive behaviors. The recognition of these functions and behaviors, combined with therapy techniques, can help clients to learn to change and improve their current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Gifford uses a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Schema Therapy and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) to help clients achieve their goals and enable them to be better. Gifford also conducts psychological assessments to help clients better understand themselves.

Gifford lectures in a local university and he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award. Gifford has also conducted several trainings and talks in schools and at public forums.

Janet Phang

Our Mental Health Partner

Janet graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Master in Clinical Psychology. She is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy, but also integrates other evidence-based therapeutic approaches in her practice to tailor interventions for her clients.

Prior to joining Psychology Matters, she worked in a variety of private and public healthcare settings (Singapore General Hospital and the National Cancer Centre). Janet works with adolescents and adults who experience mood and anxiety disorders, work stress and burnout, and relational difficulties. She also has a special interest in working with chronic diseases, especially individuals with diabetes and cancer survivors.

Janet believes in supporting her clients’ growth by helping them to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, developing different perspectives and skills that will enable them to thrive.
